NERFA 2018 Nov 8-11 | Annual Four-Day Conference - Suzi Wollenberg Folk DJ Showcase Folk DJ Instructions

Overview:

This is an invitation to Folk DJs who will be attending the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance conference to participate in the annual NERFA Suzi Wollenberg Folk DJ Showcase on Thursday, November 9, 2018. The showcase is organized and run by Folk DJs attending the annual NERFA conference. NERFA facilitates the production of this showcase as part of its conference.

The purpose of this page is to inform participating FOLK DJs of the procedures and selection guidelines to be used when making your selection for the showcase.

The goal of this showcase is for Folk DJs to introduce to each other and to conference attendees NEW or UNKNOWN artists. Thus, each Folk DJ should think in terms of either an artist that he/she has not previously seen or a new personal favorite who is not known to the majority of other Folk DJs and NERFA participants. If you are aware of Artists meeting the selection guidelines set out below, have them fill out the artists consideration form found on the NERFA website. The consideration form is open to everyone including artists not know by the participating Folk DJs. The entries will be vetted by the NERFA Steering Committee, consolidated and sent out by Rich Warren from WFMT, Chicago to participating Folk DJs.

If you are a Folk DJ and are interested in participating in this showcase, you must let us know of your interest by August 14, 2018. Folk DJ's who want to receive a list of the artists wishing to be nominated should contact Rich Warren directly at folkdj@midnightspecial.org (note new email address) and put NERFA-DJ in the subject line. The complete list of interested Artists will then be sent to the Folk DJs for nominations.

For those artists with whom you may not be familiar, the list will also contain links to their music. FOLK DJS ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO NOMINATE AN ARTIST WHO IS NOT ON THE LIST OF ARTISTS SUBMITTING. If that artist accepts the invitation, simply ask that artist to fill in and submit the Folk DJ Artist Consideration form on the NERFA Website. ALL interested Artists must enter their names on this form, even if a Folk DJ already has promised them their nomination.

NOTE: Registering for the showcase is separate from registering for the conference. Artists do not have to be registered for the NERFA conference when putting in their name for a nomination but they must register for the conference within a week after they are confirmed as a showcase participant.

Each artist/group will perform 2-3 songs. Time per artist/group will be 10-minutes with a 2-minute set-up time for a total of 12 minutes. (Taking longer than 2-minutes to set up will be deducted from the performance time.) Any artist exceeding the allotted time will have the sound system turned off at precisely 12 minutes.

Selection Guidelines:

We insist that all Folk DJs take this seriously. Each Folk DJ should choose a *new* artist about whom they are particularly excited, or an artist they are dying to see who they have not seen perform. To be eligible, an artist must not have commercially released (meaning distributed more widely than just at gigs) more than *three* CDs.

We've made a few changes for nominating artists which are listed below. Many times an artist who has performed in a previous formal or DJ showcase returns as part of a group or someone who was in a group is now a solo artist.

Here are the criteria to be considered in those cases:

What constitutes a “New Act?”
  • If the Artist performed previously as a Group and is now applying as an individual artist, that is a New Act.

  • If the Artist performed previously as an Individual and is now applying as a Group, that is a New Act ONLY so long as the other artists in the Group are approximately equal and are not simply “back-up musicians” for the artist.

Additional Selection Guidelines

  • DJs are not to inform the people they've been nominated for a Folk DJ Showcase until the NERFA Steering Committee vets the nominations

  • Each Folk DJ will nominate a primary and an alternate artist. Depending upon the total number of Folk DJs participating, a number of alternate artists may be drawn from a hat to participate. In the past few years there has been time for about none to three alternates to perform.

  • Folk DJs must be present for their nominees to perform and will introduce the artist(s) they select.

  • Artists may not perform in the Folk DJ showcase if they are performing in the main Formal Showcases or have ever performed in a main Formal Showcase. However, they remain eligible if they are performing in the Semi-Formal Showcases, assuming they have not previously performed in more than one NERFA Semi-Formal Showcase (formally the Quad or Tricentric Showcase). However, in the interest of exposing as many emerging artists as possible to the presenters and DJ's present at the NERFA conference, the NERFA Board urges you not to select anyone awarded a semi-formal showcase this year.

  • Artists may not have previously performed in the Folk DJ showcase.

Each artist/group will perform 2-3 songs. Time per artist/group will be 10-minutes with a 2-minute set-up time for a total of 12 minutes. (Taking longer than 2-minutes to set-up will be deducted from the performance time.) Any artist exceeding the allotted time will have the sound system turned off at precisely 12 minutes.

Folk DJ SELECTION DEADLINE:

Folk DJs must have their primary and alternate selections made by September 8, 2018. After which the artist will be contacted to confirm their acceptance to perform. They must then register for the conference and secure accommodations.
