NERFA Conference Updates:
- --> Complete Conference Schedules and Information Available. See FALL CONFERENCE -> Information or Schedules menu above.
How do I join NERFA?
NERFA is not an organization you join. We are the Northeast Regional chapter of Folk Alliance International, www.folk.org. If you are an FAI member and reside in the Northeast, you are automatically a member of NERFA. You do not have to be a member of FAI to come to the NERFA conference.
Must I join Folk Alliance (FAI)?
We are here to promote Folk Alliance as a community. We hope that you will join and gain from becoming part of Folk Alliance International. We do require you to be a FAI member if you are showcasing in any capacity at the NERFA conference in November.
Future enhancements to the NERFA website including Guerrilla Showcase wanted/opening announcements and ride sharing will only be accessible to FAI members. (You need to be a FAI member to perform in any NERFA Showcase - sign up today).
How do I join FAI?
There is information on their website - www.folk.org. You may also reach them by phone or email.
Conference Registration FAQ's
Who needs to register for the Conference?
Everyone must register for the conference - artists, panelists, media and sidemen etc...
If you are a showcase artist, you absolutely must register in advance. It is also advisable to register in advance so your information can be added to our program booklet which everyone receives at the conference.
How do I register?
You may register online. You may pay via PayPal, credit card or fill out the form and mail in with a check.
What are the fees for registration?
There is a starting price in July and the price will go up each month until November. There is also an on-site price as well as single day prices. Day prices can only be paid on-site.
Can I volunteer?
Yes, we love volunteers! You may volunteer hours and receive a pay check after the conference that would off-set some of the registration price. You are required to register in advance as well as pay the registration fee in advance.
Can I advertise in the program book even though I am not attending the conference.
Yes, of course. Please check our Program Ad page for rates and details in the Registration Menu (when available).
I'm only coming to hang out with my (wife, husband, son, daughter, significant other, friend, etc.) Do I need to register?
Yes. Everyone needs to be registered.
Is the cost of the hotel the cost for all the the nights, or the cost per night?
It is the cost for both Friday night and Saturday night and includes the meals for the conference.
I'm not interested in seeing the showcase. Can I just register for the hotel?
You must be registered for the conference before you can register for a hotel room.
Does the Quad price mean that each person of the four pays $135 (or whatever it is for your type room)?
What is a Formal Showcase and how do I get one?
NERFA's Formal Showcases are juried showcases. They take place on the Friday and Saturday nights of the conference. They are held in the large theater in the hotel. Full sound system and lighting are provided. There are 7 chosen performers each night, 14 in total for the weekend. Each performer gets 15 minutes of playing time as well as a sound check the morning or afternoon of their slotted time. While the Formal Showcases are being presented, no other showcasing or other events are allowed to occur in the hotel. To apply for a Formal Showcase, you will find a form on our website. Fill out the form and follow the submission and deadline instructions.
What is a Quad Showcase and how do I get one?
NERFA created the Quads when we realized we wanted more slots for showcase artists. These have become very popular with both artists and presenters alike. The Quad Showcases are juried showcases. They start immediately after the Formals on both Friday and Saturday evenings. Four showcases run simultaneously in smaller hotel conference rooms very close to each other. A step-up stage and smaller sound system and lighting systems are provided. There is no sound check for these showcases - only a line check. There are 20 artists each night - 40 total for the weekend. While the Quad Showcases are being presented, no other showcasing or other events are allowed to occur in the hotel. To apply for a Quad Showcase, you will find a form on our website. Fill out the form and follow the submission and deadline instructions.
What is a Guerrilla Showcase and how do I get one?
Guerrilla Showcases are presented after the Quad Showcases are over by the people attending the conference. There is a designated area of hotel rooms - called The Towers - where these showcases occur. They are completely unplugged - NO amplification of any kind is allowed in the Guerrilla rooms. Anyone may host a Guerrilla. If you host, you will pay a small fee which takes care of the printing of your schedule in our program book. You will be assigned a room in the Towers where you will also be staying. You then put together an evening of showcase artists you would like to present. People give out 10, 15 or 20 minute slots - your choice. Some Guerrilla rooms run in the round. You may not take a room and showcase yourself all night. You may run the room as late as you like. Again, it may not start until 11:45
How do I play in someone else's Guerrilla Showcase?
The best way to meet people who are hosting a Guerrilla Showcase is by getting onto our forum and listserv and introducing yourself if you have never before been to NERFA. Give links to your music.
I'm only coming to play at a showcase with a friend or family member. Do I need to register?
Yes. Everyone needs to be registered. Showcasing artists must also be members of the Folk Alliance.
I'm holding a Guerrilla showcase. Can I use a sound system?
No sound systems of any kind are permitted in any of the Guerrilla Showcase Rooms.
Welcome to Guerrilla Showcasing at NERFA 2018!
NERFA has borrowed a good idea from the Far West Folk Alliance conference with this table of all registered Guerrilla Showcases, updated daily. Showcase hosts who are accepting artist submissions have provided information about the type of acts they are seeking and an email address for the person to contact if you are interested in performing. We're hoping both showcase hosts and interested performers alike will find it useful:
- Guerrilla Showcase hosts seeking to fill one or more available slots in their showcase can let performers know what they are looking for and provide contact information.
- Performers seeking Guerrilla Showcase slots can view hosts and availability, as well as find contact information for hosts seeking performers.
Guerrilla Showcases are held in sleeping rooms on the designated music floor of the hotel during five specific session times: Thursday late-night, Friday afternoon, Friday late-night, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday late-night. Showcase "Sessions" as referred to in the table below are to be interpreted as follows:
- Thursday late-night: 11PM to 2:30AM
- Friday afternoon: 2PM to 5PM
- Friday late-night: 11:45PM to 3AM
- Saturday afternoon: 2PM to 5PM
- Saturday late-night: 11:45PM to 3AM
Guerrilla Showcases are ACOUSTIC ONLY! NO AMPLIFICATION DEVICES are permitted. Exemptions to this rule for instruments such as electronic keyboards must be approved on a case-by-case basis.
Performers and hosts should use the information on this page to connect with each other more directly and keep the NERFA listserv tidy and free of promotional announcements.
